This is my last photograph taken after which the convoy reached jogging pace and the protesters fell back. Upon returning to the main camp we were surprised to find that most of those at the main camp, including local politicians like Elsta Foy, had all along remained there relaxingly drinking tea.
As darkness descended Mr Sibisado spoke at the inevitable meeting, but had little to say except to praise Sergeant Neville Ripp. The audience of hard core Broome protesters brooked no dissent to this view and cheered wildly. Another perplexing factor was the disappearance of the main convoy of earth moving vehicles that had initially lined up on Cape Leveque Road. A token number had broken through the blockade, but the rest had apparently reached the construction site by another route. The breaking of the blockade appeared a police tactic to break the spirit of the protesters. On the following days the earthmovers reduced a square kilometre of Savannah to red pindan during which police officers walked alongside the machines as fires burned along the perimeters. They had been deliberately lit to hinder Woodside's "progress". |
